The tradition in the Phils is this:

Everyone MUST have a strong opinion on everything, and to give it extra weight, they must say "I knew someone this happened to".

So, you get "I know two girls who went to Australia, and their husbands chained them to the kitchen floor", or "I know someone who's husband took out life insurance on her, and then threw her out the window". I tell ya. Walk down the streets in any Aussie or Yank town and you have to dodge the Filipina bodies falling from windows!

But yes, they all get told this sort of crap by basically everybody. They get warned they'll be beaten up, chained up, treated as sex slaves, murdered for insurance money, etc. And given the fact that they're taught to listen to their elders, they take all this crap very seriously.

Worst one I experienced myself was this one. Background: I was still married to, but in the process of divorcing, a Filipina. All quite legal to do in Australia, and very simple. Wise-arse woman down the road says: "I'm only worried for you. So I went to see a judge on your behalf, and he tells me that he cannot get a divorce to a Filipina, because there is no divorce in the Philippines. So he is only using you." Well....she BELIEVES this, and we have one helluva problem until I can prove to her otherwise. These busybodies can cause a lot of trouble, so you need to be aware.

And on the blood-flow issue, if you think she's charming on the phone, just wait 'til you meet her. You won't know if you're Arthur or Martha, nor which way is up or down. Isn't that true, fellahs? :D
